Tours & Activities Last updated: 08/24/2008 TOP
Tours are Rain or Shine (It won't rain!) and non-refundable. For all tours where any maximum attendance limit exists, a waiting list will be established. Refunds if you do not get on the tour from a waiting list. So if a tour is full sign up for it anyway...people sometimes need to cancel and a waiting list will allow them to get a refund and you to get to go!

Vandenberg AFB Tour is FULL with some on waiting list. No more reservations will be taken.
Vandenberg AFB Rocket Tour: Maximum One Bus allowed (43 people) Leaving the fairgrounds at 8:30 AM. This is pretty early on the first day of the convention while we are all involved in getting things set up, but is necessary in order to complete the tour and get back before too late. The cost of this tour will be $33 and includes coach transportation and entry.
We are offering a personally guided tour of Vandenberg Air Force Base (more info at http://www.vandenberg.af.mil). This is the West Coast rocket and missile launching facility for the U.S. Air Force. Think “Cape Kennedy West” with USAF instead of NASA. You will see things up close that the general public never gets to see, plus some of the last unspoiled Southern California coastline left.
No refunds after June 14. We are allowed only enough people to fill one VAFB tour bus which is 43 people. Our slightly bigger bus leaves the fairgrounds at 8:30 am, returning in the afternoon. Lunch will be at the base officer’s club and there’s an all you can eat buffet for about $7-8.
Back at the fairgrounds that evening there will be a great welcome party (but not a dinner) with valve cover races too.
Tuesday June 24, 2008
This tour is nearing capacity, 15 slots left on 6/12/08
Universal Studios Hollywood Tour (not that much really burned down in the fire there recently): We need to fill each bus we take. (Buses are horrendously expensive!). Registration will stop at even bus fillings. The cost of this tour is $85 and includes coach transportation and park entry. The plan is to leave at 8:00 AM and return around 5:00PM
This is an all-day trip to Universal Studios Hollywood theme park (http://www.universalstudioshollywood.com).
Also Tuesday: For those not into theme parks we plan a "no-cost" afternoon walking/shopping jaunt in downtown Ventura with a local "expert" in that area. Bring your charge cards.
Tuesday evening at the fairgrounds will consist primarily of (many club and) group meetings.
Wednesday June 25, 2008
Wine Tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley. For this fun trip we will go wine tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara (http://www.syvva.com). Remember the movie “Sideways” a few years back? That area. It’s fun, beautiful, and relaxing even if you don’t drink wine. The cost of this tour is $80.
Includes transportation and a box lunch to eat in one of the wineries. Does NOT include wine tasting fees. There are usually several choices and levels of tastings at each winery, which you can pick from according to your preference, or not.
The Wine tasting tour will return mid-afternoon with plenty of time to freshen up (or dress down) for the Beach Party that evening!
Wednesday 11:00AM to Noon:
Eilleen Alber, a local quilt artist and quilt shop owner, will present a free Trunk Quilt talk in the Santa Cruz building.
Also available in the registration area will be descriptions of local quilt shops and directions for those who wish to go off on their own for quilting expeditions during the week.
Wednesday evening Beach Party BBQ- Not expecting to have to limit this event unless it goes way over 500 people! Cost for everything $15 and tickets are purchased on the general registration form in the Tours & Activities section. Beach Party BBQ ticket sales will CLOSE AT NOON on MONDAY June 23 to allow our caterer to plan appropriately for this event
After a great day wine tasting or running the Economy Run at the convention you should be ready to walk over to Promenade Park along the beach and relax with your Corvair friends, have a great Tri-tip BBQ dinner on the beach while listening to some great music and maybe playing some games, as we watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. Tri-tip is a Southern California-peculiar type of beef bar-b-que that we're sure you will enjoy. If fog is predicted to roll in heavy and early Wednesday evening we may move this event into our building, but it will still be fun!
Thursday June 26, 2008
This tour is nearing capacity
The Nethercutt Collection Tour: A maximum of 100 people will be allowed to take this tour. Cost is $30 and includes transportation and entry. We will have a box lunch OPTION available at nominal extra cost because this tour goes through the lunch hour, and it will not be feasible to go to a restaurant with 100 people and still see the rest of the collection before returning to the fairgrounds in the afternoon. You can bring your lunch or order a box lunch through the registration table...orders need to be made early in the week for box lunches.
Our tour will be to the Nethercutt Collection (http://nethercuttcollection.org). This place is well loved by our CWLA club members and even though it has some of the nicest cars in the world on display, it is so much more than a car collection. We guarantee that the car buff and the uninterested significant other will enjoy this tuxedo-guided tour of this very unique fine art collection. Minimum age requirement is 12.
Thursday evening we’ll have some more club/group meetings. CPF presentation has been cancelled.

Santa Barbara via AmTrak: The train is getting full and some of us may already have to stand. No more reservations can be taken for this event
Cost is $20 and includes advanced purchase train fair.
From the Ventura County Fairgrounds AmTrak Station we'll board the 9:34 AM #799 Pacific Surfliner for a pleasant 35 minute ride directly to downtown Santa Barbara http://www.santabarbaraca.com where you will be free to roam this beautiful seaside city at your leisure until time to return to the fairgrounds. The beach in Santa Barbara is much nicer than the one in Ventura too if you just want to hang out there and walk on the pier.
Return train options are:
BEST: The 1:59PM #784 Pacific Surfliner which gets you back at 2:40PM. This option gives you plenty of time to freshen up before the Awards Banquet Friday night.
Feasible: The 4:29PM #798 Pacific Surfliner which gets you back at 5:06PM NOTE: that the Awards Banquet Cocktail hour begins at 5:00PM, so you do not want to miss this train if you are going to the banquet! And hope the train's on time!
Late/don't care: 6:58PM #796 Pacific Surfliner which gets you back at 7:35PM. If you are not going to the banquet, but like Santa Barbara and want to stay longer. But this is the last train back! We can't come to get you, but there are shuttles that you may be able to get a ride on.
Friday Night Awards Banquet kicks off with 5:00PM Cocktail hour, sit down dinner at 6:00PM, with awards and presentations through the evening. Registration for Banquet tickets must close at NOON on Wednesday for the caterer to plan appropriately.
